Description We propose to survey 100 deg2 with XMM-Newton in SDSS Stripe 82, the location of
an unsurpassed collection of publicly available deep multi-wavelength data. The
key science goals address supermassive black hole growth and clusters of
galaxies, for which XMMs hard X-ray response and high throughput are essential.
This survey will fill a major gap in the spectral coverage over this large a
region of the sky. The survey requires virgul1200 overlapping 3.5ks pointings in
Mosaic mode, averaging 10ks across most of the field for a flux limit of F=2e-15
erg/s/cm2 for point sources. This public Stripe 82 X survey represents an
investment similar to the CDFS but for an area-flux choice that capitalizes on
XMMs unique capabilites and will constitute a major legacy for XMM.

Mission Description The European Space Agency's (ESA) X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) was launched by an Ariane 504 on December 10th 1999. XMM-Newton is ESA's second cornerstone of the Horizon 2000 Science Programme. It carries 3 high throughput X-ray telescopes with an unprecedented effective area, and an optical monitor, the first flown on a X-ray observatory. The large collecting area and ability to make long uninterrupted exposures provide highly sensitive observations.
Since Earth's atmosphere blocks out all X-rays, only a telescope in space can detect and study celestial X-ray sources. The XMM-Newton mission is helping scientists to solve a number of cosmic mysteries, ranging from the enigmatic black holes to the origins of the Universe itself. Observing time on XMM-Newton is being made available to the scientific community, applying for observational periods on a competitive basis.
