|Title||Measuring the Mass Distribution in zvirgul0.2 Cluster Lenses with XMM, HST and CFHT|

|Description||We propose moderately deep XMM EPIC observations of an X-ray luminosity limited sample of zvirgul0.2 cluster-lenses for a comprehensive study of the mass distri- bution in clusters. HST-WFPC2 and CFHT-12K observations awarded to us for most of these clusters will allow us to determine accurately the lensing mass distribution using both strong and weak lensing. The proposed XMM observations of this unique sample will enable us to measure in detail the gas and tempera- ture distribution, from which the total baryonic mass can be determined. We will thus:1)precisely constrain the mass distribution of zvirgul0.2 clusters,2)test pre- dictions of a universal mass profile and the importance of substructure,3) ca- librate the cosmologically important M-T and L-T relations for nearby clusters.|

|Mission Description||The European Space Agency's (ESA) X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) was launched by an Ariane 504 on December 10th 1999. XMM-Newton is ESA's second cornerstone of the Horizon 2000 Science Programme. It carries 3 high throughput X-ray telescopes with an unprecedented effective area, and an optical monitor, the first flown on a X-ray observatory. The large collecting area and ability to make long uninterrupted exposures provide highly sensitive observations.
Since Earth's atmosphere blocks out all X-rays, only a telescope in space can detect and study celestial X-ray sources. The XMM-Newton mission is helping scientists to solve a number of cosmic mysteries, ranging from the enigmatic black holes to the origins of the Universe itself. Observing time on XMM-Newton is being made available to the scientific community, applying for observational periods on a competitive basis.
