Description > in this proposal, more time is being requested for mwerner, wolfraye we propose to continue our iso investigate of wolf-rayet (wr) galaxies by extending observations to include the oiii 88 micron line. this will provide an assessment of the ionized gas content in the galaxies, complementing our other iso observations which probe the dust and warm netural gas phase in these objects. wr galaxies are a subset of emission line galaxies, harboring bursts of star formation remarkable in both the degree of formation activity and the short time scales over which the bursts seem to have occurred. our previous iso observations have detected the cii 158 micron line in two of three galaxies observed, with two galaxies in the original sample yet to be observed. in conjunction with isophot observations already obtained for these galaxies, which will be used to determine the luminosity of the starbursts and the dust content of their parent galaxies, the proposed lws observations will provide a more complete understanding of the nature of the interstellar environments in which these remarkable starbursts occur.

Mission Description The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) was the world's first true orbiting infrared observatory. Equipped with four highly-sophisticated and versatile scientific instruments, it was launched by Ariane in November 1995 and provided astronomers world-wide with a facility of unprecedented sensitivity and capabilities for a detailed exploration of the Universe at infrared wavelengths.
