Description We propose to observe the polarization of the 621 GHz
water vapor maser in VY Canis Majoris to demonstrate
the capability of HIFI to make polarization
observations of Far-Infrared/Submillimeter spectral
lines.
The proposed Demonstration Phase would:
- Show that HIFI is capable of interesting linear
polarization measurements of spectral lines;
- Test out the highest spectral resolving power to sort
out closely spaced Doppler components;
- Determine whether the relative intensities predicted
by Neufeld and Melnick are correct;
- Record the degree and direction of linear polarization
for the closely-Doppler shifted peaks.

Mission Description Herschel was launched on 14 May 2009! It is the fourth 'cornerstone' mission in the ESA science programme. With a 3.5 m Cassegrain telescope it is the largest space telescope ever launched. It is performing photometry and spectroscopy in approximately the 55-671 µm range, bridging the gap between earlier infrared space missions and groundbased facilities.
