Description We propose to use PACS and SPIRE in parallel mode to map about 45 sq
deg of the nearby Fornax galaxy cluster. Our science objectives are
mainly concerned with evolutionary processes within the cluster
environment. Specifically we will derive FIR/sub-mm luminosity functions,
construct complete spectral energy distributions, search for cold dust in
the outskirts of galaxies and in the intra-galactic medium and consider
and compared the properties early type and dwarf galaxies that are
prolific within the cluster environment. The total time requested is 93.2
hours.

Mission Description Herschel was launched on 14 May 2009! It is the fourth 'cornerstone' mission in the ESA science programme. With a 3.5 m Cassegrain telescope it is the largest space telescope ever launched. It is performing photometry and spectroscopy in approximately the 55-671 µm range, bridging the gap between earlier infrared space missions and groundbased facilities.
