A MEX pass on DOY 279 over DSS-63 was scheduled as Gravity Field. The station configured to provide X-band uplink support and simultaneous X-band and S-band downlink support in accordance with the SOE; DSN requirements for Gravity Field support calls for processing Ranging and Doppler on both X-band and S-band downlinks. DSS-63 attempted unsuccessfully to acquire ranging on the S-band downlink in accordance with the SOE. The MOCC reported in real-time the spacecraft was not configured to turnaround ranging on the S-band downlink. Question. Have the DSN Ranging and Doppler requirements for supporting Gravity Field changed? Please advise. Because the S-band uplink is not available for solar corona studies, only the X-band uplink, the gravity configuration was selected for the spacecraft and the ground station to ease the operations. This assumes dual-frequency ranging for the DSN. Therefore, I am also interested what went wrong on this pass in question. Michel? Let me insist that Jose Valencia asked a question about Gravity, not about Solar Conjunction. I answered that Gravity has S-band Ranging OFF, because the procedures and the sequences are so defined, and agreed with the radio-science team. The Gravity type has been negotiated with you by the Science team to offer radio-science passes although no S-Band uplink is allowed, and I personnaly find no trace of a requirement for an alteration to this mode. If you have new or updated requirements, please contact the Science team that will compile them and consult us for implementation. We would them develop new procedures, get them validated by you and apply them in a coordinated fashion with the DSN. That would assume an S-band uplink. Because S-band uplink is not available, the PST schedules all SCO as GRV with X-band uplink. It was agreed with the SOM(s) via the PST that ranging is ON on both X-band and S-band downlinks. And obviously, it was also expected to be like this by the DSN. Since we are still in the solar conjunction phase as defined by radio science in its User Manual, and now it is my turn to insist on this, gravity as "science goal Gravity" is not planned or requested in this phase. The first official gravity pass after the solar conjunction as defined by radio science is requested for the 16.October at NNO.
