We noticed that the S-band RCP and S-band LCP had practically identical levels of dB-Hz. The X-RCP was 49 and LCP was 18 dB. So this made me suspicious that S-band signals are both RCP. You and I looked into this in detail for the bistatic tests and you worked out some procedures. If you agree that this does not look right, we should talk about the procedure soon to make sure it is fixed. This does not look right. The simplest diagnostic is for the operator to make a JPEG image of the screen showing the S-band microwave configuration. Then trace the paths of S-RCP and S-LCP to see whether they are reaching the downconverters as expected. The more likely problem, however, is that the switches in the downconverters have been set to feed the same signal to both S-RCP and S-LCP in the RSR. I don't know how to diagnose this remotely. It's also possible that the switches are set correctly, but that the cables themselves have been swapped to some unexpected configuration. I would think the fact that you see comparable SNR on RCP and LCP is sufficient evidence of a problem that you could submit a DR. And hope that the engineers at SPC 60 can figure it out. We can talk, but not sure I have more insight than what you see above. If you're interested, I can send you the last procedure we drafted for bistatic radar - revised after the last MEX BSR experiment at DSS 14. It looks as though the next BSR may be requested for Madrid (DSS 43 is not available and DSS 14 is down) in late October. It would not be a bad idea to get the DSS 63 operators used to 4-channel operation as soon as possible, though I suspect the LCP importance for solar conjunction is not as high as it will be later for BSR. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From aalmeda@jftl.jpl.nasa.gov Wed Apr 27 13:58:16 2005 Return-Path: Received: from jftl.jpl.nasa.gov (jftl.jpl.nasa.gov [128.149.207.22]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.11.7p1+Sun/8.11.7) with SMTP id j3RKwGr21027 for ; Wed, 27 Apr 2005 13:58:16 -0700 (PDT) Received: from jftl.jpl.nasa.gov (Not Verified[128.149.207.21]) by jftl.jpl.nasa.gov with MailMarshal (v5,0,3,100) id ; Wed, 27 Apr 2005 13:58:31 -0700 Received: by jftl-mm.jpl.nasa.gov with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2657.72) id <24AL870Z>; Wed, 27 Apr 2005 13:58:20 -0700 Message-ID: <12373B687CF8324F843BE0CA103AA6F4044CCD47@jftl-mm.jpl.nasa.gov> From: "Almeda, Albert D" To: "'Dick Simpson 650-723-3525'" Cc: "Thomas, Teresa O" , "Campanelli, Laura" Subject: RE: Mars Express Reprocessed Data Date: Wed, 27 Apr 2005 13:58:11 -0700 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2657.72) Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----_=_NextPart_001_01C54B6B.D25F4090" Content-Length: 3878 Status: RO This message is in MIME format.
