(Note: the MEX Radio Science group, MaRS, uses mission phase definitions which deviate slightly from the definitions in the MISSION.CAT files provided by ESA in order to keep the keywords and abbreviations consistent for Mars Express, Venus Express and Rosetta.) The radio observations were carried out using the MEX spacecraft and the ESA Earth-based receiving station in New Norcia, Australia, and DSN Earth-based stations near Barstow, California, and Madrid, Spain. This data set contains example results from 12 measurements of the MEX mission. A table of contents is included, listing each file in the volume; a separate table of contents will be added to future volumes to show all files within this volume set of occultation higher science products. Each future volume will contain the results from one occultation season; these will be logically organized as separate data sets so that there is one data set per volume. Seasons typically cover several months. For development and testing of the archiving process 12 occultation measurements from different occultation seasons were selected to be representative of the total collection and comprise the first data set, delivered on this volume. The table below lists the individual higher science volumes created to date and (very briefly) their respective contents. Each volume has the structure illustrated in the diagram below. The primary data types are in the DATA directory. Subdirectories organize the data by observation type (OCC_ATMO or OCC_IONO for occultations), then by year (yyyy), and then finally by observation. Observation directories have names of the form DOY_ddd_ooo_yyyy where 'ddd' is the day of year and 'ooo' is the orbit number. Within the observation directories are profiles for the neutral atmosphere (if OCC_ATMO) and ionosphere (if OCC_IONO) and ancillary files with additional information about each observation. The naming convention for these files is described in MEX_MRS_RIU_IS_3050.PDF in the DOCUMENT directory. root | |- AAREADME.TXT |- ERRATA.TXT |- VOLDESC.CAT | | |- CATALOG | | | |- CATINFO.TXT Streamlined PDS catalog files | |- MISSION.CAT for mission, host, instrument, | |- INSTHOST.CAT references, personnel, and | |- INST.CAT data set (files evolve as | |- REF.CAT mission progresses). | |- PERSON.CAT | |- DATASET.CAT | |- SOFT.CAT | |- DATA | |-OCC_ATMO | | | | | |- 2004 | | | |- DOY_139_414_2004 | | | | |- M65RSR0L04_AIX_041391512_05.TAB (AIX file) | | | | |- M65RSR0L04_AIO_041391512_05.TXT (AIO file) | | | | |- M65RSR0L04_AIX_041391512_05.LBL (AIX label) | | | | |- M65RSR0L04_AIO_041391512_05.LBL (AIO label) | | | | | | | | | | | |- DOY_ddd_ooo_yyyy (observation directory) | | | | ... | | | | | |- yyyy (year directory) | | | |- DOY_ddd_ooo_yyyy (observation directory) | | | | |- AIX file ddd = day of year | | | | | ooo = orbit number | | | | |- AIO file yyyy = year | | | | |- detached labels for above (2) | | | | | | | |- DOY_ddd_ooo_yyyy (observation directory) | | | | | | ... | | | |-OCC_IONO | | | | | |- 2004 | | | |- DOY_139_414_2004 | | | | |- M65RSR0L04_IIO_041391512_05.LBL (IIO label) | | | | |- M65RSR0L04_IIO_041391512_05.TXT (IIO file) | | | | |- M65RSR0L04_IIX_041391512_05.LBL (IIX label) | | | | |- M65RSR0L04_IIX_041391512_05.TAB (IIX file) | | | | |- | | |- yyyy (year directory) | | | |- DOY_ddd_ooo_yyyy (observation directory) | | | | |- IIX file ddd = day of year | | | | | ooo = orbit number | | | | |- IIO file yyyy = year | | | | |- detached labels for above (2) | | | | | |- DOY_ddd_ooo_yyyy (observation directory) | | | | | | ... | | |- INDEX | | | |- INDXINFO.TXT Overview of directory | |- INDEX.LBL Label to INDEX.TAB | |- INDEX.TAB List of data file contents, this volume | | |-DOCUMENT | | | |- DOCINFO.TXT Overview of directory | |- MEX_MRS_RIU_IS_3050.PDF Higher Science File Naming | |- ... more Documents ============================================================================== ERRATA ============================================================================== A cumulative list of errors and changes is maintained in the file ERRATA.TXT at the root level of each volume. ERRATA.TXT in higher numbered volumes (or higher version numbers) will have errors for earlier volumes in the volume set. ============================================================================== DISC FORMAT ============================================================================== The volume is organized according to the PDS standard for 'one data set, one volume.' This volume will be transferred and stored on hard disks. This file (AAREADME.TXT), a PDS volume object definition (VOLDESC.CAT), and the listing of errors and changes (ERRATA.TXT) are included at the root level. The following directories of descriptive material are also at the root level: CATALOG contains descriptive files for cataloging the data on this disc. INDEX contains index information on each of the data files included in this data set; DATA contains the scientific data. The different data files are described with detached labels. DOCUMENT contains the files that provide documentation and information about the file naming convention and file formats of higher science data products. ============================================================================== FILE FORMAT ============================================================================== All data and label files are in ASCII format. Some document files are in Portable Document Format (PDF). Label files describe the formats and structure in more detail. ============================================================================== SOFTWARE ============================================================================== Software for processing and analyzing the MaRS data files is not needed, and none is included in this volume ============================================================================== ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ============================================================================== These data were collected under auspices of the Mars Express Project. M. Paetzold of the Rheinisches Institut fuer Umweltforschung of the University of Cologne is the Principal Investigator of the Radio-Science Experiment. Members of the Team and its support elements involved in data analysis and validation included S. Tellmann (RIU) and B. Haeusler (UniBW, Munich). ============================================================================== DISCLAIMER ============================================================================== Although considerable care has gone into making this volume set, errors are both possible and likely. Users of the data are advised to exercise the same caution as they would when dealing with any other unknown data set. Reports of errors or difficulties would be appreciated. Please contact one of the persons listed below. ============================================================================== COGNIZANT PERSONNEL ============================================================================== The person most directly responsible for construction and release of this volume set is Martin Paetzold (MaRS PI). Although many people contributed to the volume set, any faults in the product are his alone.
