This was the first real-time operation for DSS 63 in support of BSR. All four channels seemed very stable and the noise figures seemed very good throughout. The calibration procedures went smoothly and, so far as we could tell, there were no anomalies. The surface echoes in RCP may have been a little stronger, the echoes in LCP slightly weaker; but this would be consistent with the higher incidence angle. As before, there was considerable structure in the echo spectrum, suggesting heterogeneities in the surface structure. We also saw a brief echo during the pre-BSR slew, but this appeared to be weaker than the ones on 238 and 239. There is another BSR on day 249, while I am at the DPS meeting. This will be the first experiment I have missed personally; but the Radio Science Systems Group at JPL is well-trained, the routine should be almost identical to what we followed on day 243, and I have full confidence in their ability to collect the data. The day 249 data will be checked when I return from Europe after the MaRS Team meeting in Brussels on 12-13 Sept. This brief report is intended to provide operations feedback to the mission planners and experiment support personnel in the distribution list. Please do not distribute the results further without permission of the MaRS PI, Martin Paetzold. Please thank the crew again for their fantastic support. I heard from the Bistatic RADAR investigator that the pass worked very well meeting all expectations. For me personally, "living" at the station for a couple of weeks is rewarding and educational. We sometimes forget the effort required to make the job look easy.
