There was some concern during the early part of the observations that signal levels from two receivers were not correct; but quick-look processing at Stanford shows no obvious problems with data quality. Surface echoes were observed in real time in all four receiver channels; they became stronger as the spacecraft moved from apocenter toward pericenter. The specular point started at about (10N, 117W) -- west of Ascraeus Mons -- moved southwest along the base of Tharsis, crossed the equator at about 126W longitude, and ended near (28S, 125W). It probed the boundary between Tharsis and Medusa Fossae (also known as Stealth), which some believe to be a deep, homogeneous, fine-grained deposit that originated from the volcanoes.
