It was necessary to use the VSR again for this support as there were indications of corrupt data occurring for other missions at RSR1 at Madrid. As you may be aware, the subchannels are configured a little differently on the VSR, and for the pre-cal, I mistakenly recorded the 8-khz bandwidth (schan "1n2") instead of the 25-khz bandwidth (schan "2n1"). (The VSRs don't have a graphical display indicating which subchannels are being recorded like the RSRs, so there is no indication of recording status unless you enter a command to check or bring up an FFT.) The remainder of the experiment will be done on the proper subchannel. I hope the 8-khz data can still be useful for calibration, or that at least the remaining calibrations are sufficient. I had to convert back to the original file name (101701409.L03.6304100170), which my Stanford software uses to create a new file name and registration. Everything else seems normal. There should be no problem with e-mail file sizes. In practical terms, the only limit here is the amount of disk space available on the computer. Thanks also for the ops log/spreadsheet. And I replied to Danny's separate e-mail about the 8 kHz recording -- if you're going to slip up, recording the pre-cal at 8 kHz is about the lowest impact error possible. S-RCP power varied by about 0.5 dB during the pre-cal with the ambient load connected. Somewhat smaller variations can be seen with the ambient load connected during the post-cal. Because of the instability, it may not be possible to calibrate the noise diode from the post-cal ambient load data (with and without the noise diode). Other configurations are usually preferred, but the ambient load configuration provides a cross-check on receiver linearity. S-RCP gain also appeared to vary by up to 0.2 dB during the surface observations on time scales of 10 minutes; this will introduce about a +/-2.5 percent error in the S-RCP echo power estimate. Instabilities in the S-LCP LNA are more confined in time but larger in magnitude. At 19:15 the S-LCP noise power suddenly increased by about 0.2 dB over about one minute in time. The noise power appeared to remain at the new level for the remainder of the observations ... except that starting at 19:27 the noise power began to decrease. The rate accelerated until about 2.5 dB in noise power had been lost at 19:31:30. Over the next minute, the noise power returned to its previous (e.g., 19:26) level. Similar 2.5 dB dropouts over 5-6 minutes have been noted during the bistatic radar experiments on days 106, 135, and 142 (all on S-LCP at DSS 63). DSN DRs to document 170 18:29 - 19:38 incident report: During the MEX Bi-Static radio science support the principle investigator reported the S-band RCP varied around 0.5 dB during the pre-cal when measuring the ambient load. The precursor in slide 2 is unique. The event in slide 3 may be different; the power loss overlays a noise diode calibration, so it is difficult to tell what the signature of each should be. The second event in slide 5 may also be different; it's not as deep or as long as the others. Curiously, it occurs after the antenna has reached the 'stow' position. The other events are very similar, and they seem to occur near EL=45. I will report on any new events from the experiment on day 184. Then we can discuss next Wednesday.
