The S-RCP carrier was also noisy, but only at +/-0.2 dB. The first 15 minutes were at elevation angles 6-9 deg, which may be the explanation; no sources of variability could be identified from the NMC log. Carrier levels during the post-experiment BCAL period (two hours later) were much better. Real-time monitoring of S-LCP analog-to-digital amplitudes showed them to be very unstable throughout the entire observation. But there is little evidence for problems in the RSR data. However, the S-LCP noise diode is barely distinguishable from the ambient load noise in the pre-cal; and it may be necessary to use post-experiment data (which look better) to calibrate the S-LCP noise diode. The X-Band echo power is very dynamic in both RCP and LCP until 11:27, after which it becomes much more difficult to discern. During this time the specular point was at high southern latitudes, suggesting a fundamental change in centimeter-scale surface properties at latitudes poleward of 60S. The S-Band echo is not really visible in the plots of sample power versus time; determining its behavior will require more advanced processing.
