Serious configuration problems were discovered during the day 111 ground station pre-calibration. DSS 43 had not been used for bistatic radar since July 2005; switch and cabling assignments had been changed. Initially the X-RCP signal was being fed to both X-Band receivers and the S-RCP signal was being fed to both S-Band receivers. There was also considerable confusion over how to control the noise diodes. Eventually, with the help of the NOPE and on-site engineering and operations personnel, the problems were sorted out in time for the surface observations. The only problem during the 2006/113 observations was that the S-RCP and S-LCP inputs to the RSR's were switched from what was expected. This did not represent a significant performance problem, so operations personnel noted the anomaly but did not try to make any changes. The next ESA bistatic radar experiment is scheduled for 23 May at DSS 43 using Venus Express. The next MEX bistatic radar experiment is believed to be on 30 May; no more than two additional MEX BSR's are expected between June and November because of severe eclipse limitations on MEX science payload operations.
