Introduction 2. File format 3. File naming convention 4. Volume contents 5. Recommended hardware and software 6. Disclaimer / confidence note 7. Contact information 1. Introduction ---------------- This dataset contains Smart-1 Demonstration Compact Imaging X-Ray Spectrometer (DCIXS) data products. The DCIXS instrument also provides the measurements of the X-ray Solar Monitor (XSM) sensor. Although the XSM data products are archived separately in their own dataset, it was decided to include the XSM raw data products in the DCIXS dataset as well. The data products are included in subdirectories of the DATA directory located one level below the root. The subdirectories containing data from the operations of the DCIXS instrument use the following name format: For the Earth Escape Phase: EARTH_ESCAPE_yyyy_mm_TO_nn The subdirectory contains data from year yyyy month mm to month nn. Example EARTH_ESCAPE_2003_09_TO_12 EARTH_ESCAPE_2004_04_TO_06 EARTH_ESCAPE_2004_10_TO_11 i.e. each directory contains a few months of data. For the Lunar Phase and Extended Mission Phase: ORBIT_mmmmm_TO_nnnnn The subdirectory containing data from orbit mmmmm to orbit nnnnn in steps of 100 orbits. Example ORBIT_00000_TO_00099 ORBIT_00100_TO_00199 ORBIT_00200_TO_00299 Documentation is included as part of the dataset to allow users to better understand the DCIXS instrument and its role in the Smart-1 mission to the moon. This documentation is included in the DOCUMENT directory one level below the root. Additional information deemed useful to users of the dataset are included in the EXTRAS directory one level below the root. 2. File formats ---------------- This section provides a brief description of the files available on the DCIXS archive volume. A complete description of each file format is available in the DOCUMENT/EAICD text on the archive volume. Text files (extension .TXT), document files (extension .ASC), catalog files (extension .CAT) and PDS detached label files (extension .LBL) all have stream or fixed-length record format including a (CR) carriage return (ASCII 13) and (LF) linefeed (ASCII 10) at the end of the record as delimiter. All have line lengths of 80 characters except catalog files, they have a line lengths of 72 characters. This includes the CR and LF characters. The PDS labels in the DCIXS Data Archive conform to PDS standards [Planetary Science Data Dictionary, 2001; PDS Standards Reference, 2003]. Data products (extension .TAB). All tabular data are formatted as ASCII TEXT files with COMMA DELIMITED fields (data columns.) All tabular files are paired with a detached PDS LABEL file in the same directory or subdirectory that shares the same base file. See section 3 for an example. The data files were extracted from a raw binary formatted data stream. This raw binary data was processed to CODMAC level 2. It was decided to include the conversion from raw data values to engineering units. The raw binary data as received from the spacecraft/DDS is not archived. Document files (DOCUMENT/file_name.ASC) always exist in ASCII TEXT format and are also present in PDF format. Documents that contain formatting and figures that cannot be rendered as ASCII text are provided as PDF files. The PDF (Portable Document Format) file is a proprietary format of Adobe Systems Incorporated a that can be viewed using the free Acrobat Reader software. An EXTRAS directory is included with the dataset and contains files with information, textual and graphic, that may help the dataset users to better understand the DCIXS instrument operation and the content of the processed data files. These files are in Portable Network Graphic (*.PNG), Comma Separated Values (*.CSV), ASCII text (*.TXT) and Microsoft Office Excel (*.XLS) format. 3. File Naming Convention -------------------------- Data products have the following names: S1_DCIXS___
__
.EEE Where: S1 = mission/spacecraft identifier DCIXS = instrument identifier = year (0000-9999) = month (01-12)
= day of month (01-31) = Txx where xx is the type number (see table below for details)
= is the sequence number of the file within a day, (00-99) EEE = extension, TAB for the data products, LBL for the detached label file. Type Meaning ----------------------------------------- 00 Housekeeping 01 DCIXS Time Tagged Events 02 DCIXS Low Count Spectrum 03 DCIXS High Count Spectrum 04 XSM Spectrum 05 n/a 06 DCIXS Compressed Low Count 07 n/a 8A DC1XS operating parameters 8B XSM operating parameters 9A Noise spectra 9B Detector means Example S1_DCIXS_2005_01_19_T19_03.TAB S1_DCIXS_2005_01_19_T19_03.LBL 4.
