As for the clipping on XL, the fgain of 36 was more than enough on DOY 330 at DSS-63. I wonder if that channel, too, was receiving RCP. I made a query to the NOPEs but have yet to hear back. As for day 325, I'm sure I just overcompensated for that being the first S-Band recording in a while (and the pass being scripted). There are a couple more days where I think you will find some clipping on XR (day 334 & 336). These are puzzling because fgain was set the same as on other days (5 dB above SNR) which had no problem. The execution logs show that ADC amplitude did not drive out of the nominal range. I compensated in subsequent scripts by increasing fgain by a few more dB, in spite of the possibility of having too much attenuation. I believe the SEP angle is pretty small right now, and we are seeing distinctly lower signal levels. But I'm wary of lowering the fgain in the scripts because I don't want it to clip. Is the impact on the science particularly negative if we keep attenuation higher than necessary? ________________________________________ From: Dick Simpson 650-723-3525 [rsimpson@magellan.stanford.edu] Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2008 7:29 PM To: Kahan, Daniel S; Goltz, Gene L Subject: MEX Solar Conjunction Signal Levels There is a lot of variability in the signal levels. On day 325 there was probably 15-20 dB too much attenuation at DSS 65; on day 333 the signal was so badly clipped that it needed at least 10 dB MORE attenuation. I'm not sure what kind of feedback is best in this situation. Do you have any suggestions?
