OVERVIEW: DSS-14 is scheduled to support a Mars Express bistatic radar (BSR) experiment on DOY 205. BSR experiment employs the MEX spacecraft's transmitter and a DSN 70-m antenna to simultaneous receive weak S-band and X-band right hand circular and left hand circular polarized signals. These four RF signals are then routed to and recorded by Radio Science Receivers (RSRs). At a predetermined time during the pass, the spacecraft slews toward Mars so that its transmitted S-band and X-band RCP signals illuminate the planet's surface. As the X and S-band RCP signals reflect off the surface, a Left Circular Polarization (LCP) signal is produced effectively creating four signals; 1) S-band RCP, 2) S-band LCP, 3) X-band RCP and 4) X-band LCP. 2. SUPPORT DOCUMENTATION: a. Mars Express NOP 871-049-041, Rev. A b. This briefing message c. The attached bistatic radar SOE supersedes the DSN SOE. Radio Science shall provide start/stop times of BSR mini-pre-calibrations near real-time. 3. SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS: a. DOWNLINK SUPPORT ONLY b. DTTS (DOWNLINK TRACKING AND TELEMETRY) RECEIVERS: * One DTT shall be configured with table 7041HRX to support X-band, and to control the 12.5k noise diode on/off at predetermined times during pre-pass calibrations, real-time BSR activities and post calibrations activities. * A second DTT shall be configured with table 7041HRXS to support S-band carrier lock only and to control the 12.5 k noise diode on/off at predetermined times during pre-pass calibrations, real-time BSR activities and post calibrations activities. c. The RSRs are controlled and configured remotely by the Radio Science group located at JPL. The RSR operator will configure four radio science receivers to simultaneously receive and record S-band and X-band RCP and LCP polarized signals. The RSR equipment requires both S-band and X-band 1-way and 2-way downlink predicts. The actual RSR resources configured for support will depend on availability. 1. R1B IFS 14_S_RCP 2. SPACECRAFT CONFIGURATION: The spacecraft shall be reconfigured for X-band and S-band downlink carrier only in accordance with the BSR SOE ( see attachment) 8. PRE-CALIBRATION PROCEDURES AND CONFIGURATION a. There were three surprises: 1. During the slew to the inertial pointing attitude (and about 30 minutes before the scheduled specular point observation), we saw strong echoes in all four receiver channels. Apparently the slew maneuver passed close to a DIFFERENT specular point. We will have to look closely at the reconstructed attitude file to see how good this "accidental" specular pointing was; but the fact that we have strong echoes in all four channels suggests that we have good enough data to claim TWO specular points for the price of one (on both days). Of course, the better solution would have been to have let the HGA track the specular point from this accidental observation through the planned observation and obtained MANY specular points. Hopefully "spot" pointing is still a priority. 2. On day 238 the S-band echo appeared first and remained visible through almost the entire BSR period. Although the HGA beamwidth is much wider at S-band, the radiated power is so much less that we usually see X-band first. The fact that S-band appeared first probably is a consequence of the high incidence angle (higher than usual S-RCP reflection coefficient) and the decreasing Earth-Mars distance. 3. The X-band echo appears to have two components; there is both a broad and moderately strong echo and a very strong, very narrow one. The narrow echo appears initially about 700 Hz higher in frequency. Over the course of the observation, it slowly drifts through the other. We have seen split echoes in MGS data from the north polar region where part of the echo was coming from the top of the ice cap and the other part was coming from incised canyons. But we have not seen a 700 Hz separation before. This could prove to be an interesting scientific result, particularly if we can locate the two components on the surface. This brief report is intended to provide operations feedback to the mission planners and experiment support personnel in the distribution list. Please do not distribute the results further without permission of the MaRS PI, Martin Paetzold.
