The maximum SNR during bistatic radar experiments on 2008/231 was 64-65 dB/Hz. The difference between 70-m (BSR) and 34-m antennas is about 6 dB, and the increased Earth-Mars separation (2.37 vs 2.45 AU) accounts for less than 1 dB. The observed carrier levels (47-49) dB during these occultations are about 10 dB lower than expected for the telemetry OFF condition. The occultation appears to have been missed on 2008/257. The carrier disappeared suddenly on both S- and X-Band at about 21:52:10, returned for less than a minute at X-Band and at variable levels for a couple minutes at S-Band around 21:59, and then disappeared again at about the predicted time of the occultation. The S-Band noise level dropped about 1 dB immediately before the signal reappeared at 21:59, and the carrier frequency appears to be very unstable during its reappearance in both channels. One explanation might be that the local oscillator driving both RSRs suffered a transient failure. In any case, there is not enough good data to allow derivation of an occultation profile at either frequency. About 4-6 minutes before ingress on 2008-259 the S-Band carrier level became very unstable for a couple minutes. There is no indication that the frequency was unstable, and the problem appears to have cleared itself for the remaining time before occultation. So these data can probably be used to construct an S-Band profile, if care is taken in handling the pre-occultation baseline. Closed Loop Data ================ Data Collection --------------- We have collected, labeled, and stored the following closed-loop data on our system at Stanford. The files are also being copied to the MaRS staturn system where they will appear under /cygdrive/e/raid0/stanford/MEX in directories ODF and TNF. These data cover the days 221-259 in 2008. The following are dual-band ODFs at 60-second sampling. The files have also been copied to the MaRS saturn system where they appear under /cygdrive/e/raid0/stanford/MEX in directories ION, TRO, and WEA. ION files are ionosphere media calibration files, and TRO files are troposphere media calibration files; each file covers (approximately) one month. ION and TRO files included here cover August 2008. WEA files are meteorological data files (one for each DSN complex). Each file is cumulative for the year; these cover the first 266 days of 2008.
