DESCRIPTION = " These tables define the configuration of the present and past modes used by IES to return data from the instrument. To fit within the data rate allocated to the instrument, counts acquired at discrete adjacent elevation steps (or angles), azimuths (or anodes) or energy steps may be summed and telemetered as a single value. Another option is to limit the ranges of the same parameters. This configuration may be identical or different for the ION and ELC products. Note that the instrument actually acquires full resolution data at the entire range for all modes. These modes describe only how the data are packaged for telemetry. Each mode has a unique Mode ID which is displayed in the data files, a Cycle Duration that specifies the number of seconds required to complete a full acquisition cycle, Rate which specifies whether the mode can be used when IES is in a burst rate or normal data rate, a Mode Table Number which is the IES internal memory slot number where the table resides, an Uplink Date which is the date the mode was available for use and a Replacement Date when the memory slot of the mode was updated by a different mode. The remaining columns list the details of range and collapse of the energy, azimuth and elevation steps for ION and ELC products - the number of values returned, the step numbers (range) and in case of energy, the corresponding values in electron-volts, and the number of bins summed together. In the data files, these values are displayed as summed for energies and elevation along with step ranges. For azimuths, since the number of columns is fixed at 16, the values are divided by the number of summed azimuths. Cycling of ESA voltages is completed using 128 steps (0 to 127) which include 4 steps (124 to 127) during 'flyback' (FB), the transition from the highest voltage of 1667 V (step 123) to 0 V (step 127). The actual transition time does not require all 4 steps, just one step. So science data readings during the first step of the flyback, 124 (FB1) should be considered unreliable to measure the background counts. Steps 125 (FB2) and 126 (FB3) may be considered as 0V for background measurements if not combined with other steps. Initial flight measurements indicated a high level of noise counts in ELC Azimuth #11. In 2007, all mode tables were updated to discard counts from this channel. Subsequently, Azimuth #12 became noisy as well and it was removed from all tables in 2014. If a mode returns counts averaged across multiple azimuths, the counts in Azimuths 11 and 12 are excluded from the average.
