POS & ICP Files

This directory contains the following types of file:

• Planned Observation Sequence (POS)
• Instrument Command Parameters (ICP)

There is a POS and ICP file for each operational day (OD). The POS file is generated by the Scientific Mission Planning System (SMPS) by adding instrument and pointing commands to the Planning Skeleton File (PSF) for the OD. The parameters of the instrument commands are contained in a separate ICP file to avoid over-complicating the POS.

There may be more than one version of a POS/ICP. The files actually used for a given OD are the ones with the highest version number. The 'sent' folder contains the versions that were sent to MOC. In some cases, more than one version was sent because a replanning was needed after the initial delivery. Other versions that were generated locally at the SOC are not included here.

The header of the POS file contains the version number of the PSF from which it was generated. The POS and ICP have matching version numbers but these are not necessarily the same as the PSF version.

Format/ICD

• Herschel Planned Observation Sequence (POS) ICD, Herschel-HSC-ICD-0377, issue 2.0, 26-02-2010
• The file name NNNN_VVVV.POS or NNNN_VVVV.ICP indicates the OD number NNNN and version VVVV.

Known anomalies

• OD-145: The onboard timeline was overwritten with version 2 of the POS file from the end of the cooler recycling which was in version 1. A "handcrafted" POS/ICP version 0099 has been created to reflect the commands actually executed. See SCIAT-222.

• OD-150: The POS file 01500003.POS was used to generate the EPOS, even though we had delivered a version 0004. The version numbering of POS/ICP files is such that the highest version number is always the applicable one. Consequently, version 01500004 POS & ICP files have been moved from the "sent" directory to the sub-directory "removed".

• OD-392: The OD was replanned close to the execution date. By mistake, the timeline from the original POS (03920002.POS) was used up to the end of DTCP and the replanned version (03920004.POS) was only used from DTCP onwards. The only observation in the DTCP was the cooler recycling, for which the OBSID matches POS 0002 (see SCIAT-161 and SCIAT-165 for more details).

• OD-424: The executed timeline was based on POS version 0001 up to the end of DTCP and version 0002 from the end of DTCP. A "handcrafted" POS/ICP version 0099 was created to allow generation of the AHF. See SCIAT-165.

• OD-799: Something went wrong with the replanning of this OD. The executed timeline was based on POS version 0001 up to the end of DTCP and version 0002 from the end of DTCP. See SCIAT-165.

  For ODs 0392, 0424 and 0799, merged POS and ICP files have been created by taking the DTCP part of one file and the subsequent part of the other file, with the version number in the POS header edited accordingly. These files have been given version number 0099, so it is clear that they are not normal POS files created by MPS.

  For OD-145, merged POS and ICP files have been created using version 1 up to the end of the cooler recycling and version 2 for the rest of the OD.
